PaylinX Corporation - Corporate Brochure
Published November 1999

Author’s notes:
This corporate brochure targeted prospective customers, partners, investors and employees and introduced our pioneering approach to payment technology. Complementary pieces focused on solutions for specific channels and vertical markets. While long, the brochure’s layout facilitated easy scanning and comprehension not apparent in this text file.

The piece highlighted two competitive advantages:

  • The PaylinX software allows a company to accept credit cards and other forms of payment at an e-commerce site, a call center, the physical point-of-sale – and every other channel. In contrast, competitors focused on just one payment channel, Internet payments (unsurprising since at the time, dot.coms were sizzling). We knew, however, that forward thinkers were moving toward channel convergence, giving our enterprise-wide platform a distinct strategic advantage.
  • Ours was also the most scalable product on the market. With the concept of Six Dimensions of Scalability, we reinforced that attribute by expanding the definition of scalability to demonstrate further long-term flexibility and adaptability.

PaylinX: The New Standard for Payments
When you think payments , think PaylinX..

The PaylinX payment solution is a robust, enterprise-wide transaction processing platform that arms an organization with unparalleled payment flexibility and power.

Ours is an enterprise payment solution with elasticity. It’s designed expressly to process payments originated across multiple channels, accept multiple payment forms and drive multiple business applications – all from a single, uniform and universal architecture. That means it’s designed with room to grow – not just up, but up and out and sideways and forward and well, you get the picture.

The truth is that while other companies go on and on about e-commerce, PaylinX powers e-commerce and E-commerce – that is, Enterprise commerce – for some of the most successful businesses in the world.

PaylinX operates behind the scenes – invisibly but powerfully – to authorize and settle credit card and other payment transactions through built-in connections with third-party processors and merchant banks, all in seamless integration with legacy front-end, financial management and customer relationship systems.

The PaylinX solution is a highly scalable, highly reliable transaction processing engine that provides continuous capacity growth. At the same time, our adaptive architecture provides consistent access into legacy systems, transactional integrity across an entire transaction chain, a unified and secure architecture – and the ability to process payments across all channels.

Merging Clicks and Bricks

Has the battle between the dot-com companies and traditional merchants been decided?

Certainly not. Still, there’s no doubt that the Internet changes how consumers and corporations alike shop and buy. In the end, will Internet start-ups win the struggle for mind- and wallet-share? They offer lots of advantages – and certainly grab lots of headlines. But traditional brick-and-mortar merchants have plenty of strengths to bank on too: brand, a customer base, physical presence.

Will either business model win out? Maybe -- but maybe not.

Our belief is that the two business models will converge somewhere in the middle, integrating best-of-breed practices and industrial-class innovations.

Even today, only a handful of companies rely on a single distribution channel. Many long-established merchants sell products and service over the Internet. In turn, even the most successful Web-based merchants are adding call center support and brick-and-mortar stores to bolster their brands and sales reach.

Meanwhile, technologists charged with bridging wide-flung enterprises face enormous strategic and tactical challenges. At bare minimum, technology investments must:

  • Support not one but many channels, each with different requirements and varied legacy infrastructure
  • Prepare for future channels, even those not yet on the radar screen
  • Scale on many dimensions as shopping, evaluation, purchase and fulfillment preferences change over time

At PaylinX, we power whole enterprises not just one channel. Internet e-commerce. Telephone sales and service. In-store POS.

At PaylinX, we arm our customers with a way to integrate their clicks and their bricks.

We believe it’s the only way.

Flexibility and Choice the PaylinX Way

The New Economy is forcing change at web-warp speed. Companies that adapt and innovate may thrive. Those that don’t will certainly fail to flourish – or just fail.

It’s no wonder our customers are a demanding bunch. They should be: they run many of the top online and offline businesses in the world. Facing hypercompetition and fighting for differentiation. Staying a pace ahead of customers’ relentless demand for convenience, information, choice and value.

We believe you, our customers, are the world’s greatest authorities on what you need. No one – NO ONE -- better knows your markets, your competitors or your core competencies.

So we ask questions, listen to answers, provoke new questions and discern opportunities, explore alternatives and advance a solution. Every hour of every day we strive to provide new choices so each customer can choose exactly and uniquely what is needed and when.

It’s pretty simple, actually.

PaylinX fits into your unique environment. You select the channels. You select the payment forms and the business applications. You select the server hardware, the customer-interaction systems, where your data is stored, the transmission bandwidth, the legacy systems with which to interface, the third-party processor, the merchant bank.

At every step, your business – not ours – shapes the specific PaylinX configuration delivered just for you.

"Here’s what I don’t need … yet another payment system that won’t let my company grow. Fix that and you’ve got something … "

Six-Dimensional Scalability

Day in and day out, our customers tell us about products that simply don’t scale – and as a result, simply don’t work. Let’s face it: in today’s competitive business environment, no one can afford a cyber crash.

For some, scalability has a single definition – a product’s ability to accommodate transaction growth and spikes without performance degradation.

At PaylinX, we understand that’s not enough. .

We engineer scalability on not one but six dimensions, each fundamental to the growth and prosperity of companies transforming themselves in the New Economy.

Side table

PaylinX Six-Dimensional Scalability

  • Transaction Volume Scalability
  • Channel Scalability
  • Payment Form Scalability
  • Geographic Scalability
  • Bandwidth Scalability
  • Business Application Scalability

Author’s note: The following section was formatted into a two-page fold-out for easy readability.

Transaction Volume Scalability Companies without scalability risk processing nightmares, situations so frightening that an otherwise well-grounded company could actually founder. So we designed the architecture of the PaylinX payment processing platform to deliver world-class, high-performance volume scalability. Our multi-threaded architecture processes tens of thousands of transactions an hour on a single server at lightning speed.

With our architecture’s end-to-end multi-threading, transactions originating across an enterprise are processed concurrently rather than one at a time or a few at a time. Each transaction proceeds independently through the payment engine (and into the outside world for authorization and back again for response to the buyer) unaffected by other transactions being processed. There is no queuing – no need for one transaction to wait for others to complete before it can proceed.

The impact of multi-threading is so powerful that fast companies simply won’t live without it. Imagine breakneck response time, typically two to five seconds. Then imagine the bottom line results: better customer service, reduced labor costs, reduced operating expenses.

In addition, with PaylinX, multiple servers operate as a single logical system using the same single, uniform architecture and accessing a common transaction payment database. Install a single server today, than add others as your business grows and expands.

With PaylinX, you control the pace of growth.

Channel Scalability Not so very long ago, the point-of-sale meant just one place: the cash register.

Today, however, most companies reap the gains – and bear the complexity – of an increasing array of customer-convenient touchpoints. A Web store-front. A call center with dozens or hundreds or even thousands of seats. Interactive voice response (IVR) systems.

And what will be the next "point-of-sale"? Already, a British supermarket is testing consumer response to purchasing groceries from home kitchens with the increasingly popular and affordable Palm Pilot.

And which point-of-sale exists today only on futuristic drawing boards but will be commonplace in ten years? We can speculate. But what we can count on is there will always be something new.

The channels of commerce are changing. Today few companies can afford to rely on a single sales and service channel. In fact, a reality of the New Economy is that new channels add to, not displace, existing channels.

Consumers and businesses alike are demanding time-of-day and time-of-place convenience. And there is little patience when services provided through one channel are not offered with the same speed and convenience of others.

Observe the number of traditional point-of-sale and catalog merchants that now sell products over the Internet – and the number of high-profile Web merchants now opening call centers and building brick-and-mortar store-fronts, all to extend brand identity and sales reach.

How channel preferences sort out over time is anyone’s guess. During the transition period, of course, buyer activity will fluctuate among channels. Whatever your customers’ choices, you’re prepared when you’ve got PaylinX as your corporate solution.

PaylinX supports all channels commonly in use across the world today, including:

  • Internet
  • Call center
  • IVR or VRU (interactive voice response or voice response unit)
  • Self-service kiosk
  • Point-of-sale

In addition, the PaylinX payment processing platform is expressly architected for channel scalability so that new channels – mobile phones or personal digital assistants, for example – may be easily integrated into the uniform architecture as they emerge over time.

Payment Form Scalability New payment instruments lie at the heart of thriving economies. New forms of payment are designed to spur consumer adoption, others for use by small businesses, still others for large and distributed enterprises. Some might become common in certain parts of the world – and fail to take off in others.

But the fact is, new forms of payment are over the horizon. And no one can predict today the preferred vehicles for tomorrow.

The PaylinX payment processing platform supports numerous payment forms commonly in use across the world today, including:

  • Revolving credit cards
  • Travel and entertainment cards
  • Affinity cards
  • Purchasing cards
  • Offline debit cards
  • Online debit cards*
  • Private label cards
  • Loyalty and incentive cards
  • Electronic check acceptance
  • Check verification and guarantee
  • ACH one-time purchase
  • ACH recurring payment
  • EBT (electronic benefits transfer) cards
  • Smart cards*
  • Stored value cards*

* Scheduled development

The PaylinX architecture is expressly designed for payment form scalability so that new payment instruments – virtual cash? digital wallets? – can be integrates as commercial acceptance arises and evolves.

Only with PaylinX can you be assured that by architecture and by philosophy, new forms of payments can be easily integrated into your business operations. Only with PaylinX can you be assured that you will be ready when the time comes.

Geographic Scalability In the New Economy, globalization of trade in business-to-consumer and business-to-business segments is increasing month by month at a pace that seems to have no limit. The world is truly a global market, placing entirely new demands on an organization’s technology infrastructure.

At PaylinX, we believe that our job is to stimulate global trade by removing the barriers of commerce, creating global scalability for the first time in the payment industry.

To facilitate global trade, for starters, the PaylinX payment processing platform may operate on two or more distributed servers in different physical locations – yet still perform logically as a single unit with load balancing, failover and a common transaction database.

In addition, PaylinX supports multiple currencies so that payments can be accepted in one currency and settled in another. Imagine being Powered by PaylinXTM: a PaylinX server is operating at your site in Brazil, accepts a purchase over the Internet from a French consumer denominated in francs, delivered by your trading partner in Japan in a transaction denominated in yen, all settling in Brazilian real. Then consider such transactions occurring in 180 countries – now that is the power of geographic scalability!

PaylinX also implements the security protocols commonly in place across the world, including SSL and SET. Other security standards may well evolve, especially as Internet access and usage escalates across the globe. By design, new security protocols are easily incorporated into the single, universal architecture of the PaylinX enterprise payment server.

When we design for geographic scalability, we like to think big. As global trade accelerates, what will simplify the import and export process? What will create communities of buyers and sellers? What will make the export of goods as simple as the purchase of a book at a store or over the Internet?

At PaylinX, creating customer choices for global expansion – yours, not ours – are things we think about and plan for every day.

Bandwidth Scalability The PaylinX enterprise payment solution accommodates the telecommunications bandwidth an organization needs, whether large or small. If your organization expects limited transaction volume, one or more dial circuits may suffice. Companies expecting higher transaction volumes may require the greater throughput of leased lines or frame relay.

But the decision is not permanent. As your business grows, telco connections can be upgraded to increase transaction throughput. The upgrade is a phone call away – it’s that easy!

Business Application Scalability The last thing an IT shop needs is another box – or another single-purpose system to support, or another application interface to de-bug.

So the power and flexibility of the PaylinX transaction processing engine – and its multiple business applications – has natural appeal for many.

The payment and information transaction opportunities are many:

  • Business-to-consumer purchase
  • Fraud detection and prevention
  • Payment gateway
  • Payment outsourcing service
  • Business-to-business purchase *
  • Electronic bill presentment and payment *
  • Electronic letters of credit *
  • Retail drug authorization, adjudication and drug interaction *
  • Health care insurance authorization and adjudication*

* Scheduled development

With PaylinX, once again, the choice is yours.

Choose a multiple-application solution so that related business functions operate seamlessly and simultaneously – all powered by our uniform and integrated architecture.

Or choose an alá carte solution. Start today with a single application, knowing that if and when you’re ready to add others later as your business demands, PaylinX will be ready for you..
